ELT 3 Elective: Education from a Critical Lens

In this course, we try to understand education from a critical lens. But what is “critical lens”?

In order to answer this question, we will ask even more questions and will discuss different answers. We ask questions about what makes us human beings. Are we machines just like computers? Are we animals just like apes? Why do humans have schools? To answer these questions, we will discuss topics like the purpose of schools in society, the meanings of literacy, reading and writing and other similar topics. By having meaningful conversations about these topics, we make sure that this class is not boring or worthless.

ELT 4 Elective: Teaching for Transformation

We hear many times that teachers are just like prophets, that teachers are very important in society, that teachers have an important role in schools and the educational system. Are these statements true? We will try to examine the answers to this question. Some of us might not even want to become teachers. But as parents, as shopkeepers, as taxi drivers, or as business owners, we are still engaged in teaching. We can become either powerful teachers or powerless followers of rules and regulations. In this class, we will discuss different ways to become teachers that can transform education and society.
