December 17th of each year is the Kurdistan Flag Day which was designated by the Kurdistan Region parliament in 2009. In this context Dean of Students of Tishk International University held a ceremony for commemorating this day.

The main characteristic of the Kurdish flag is the blazing golden sun emblem (Roj in Kurdish) at its center. The emblem’s sun disk has 21 rays, equal in size and shape, with the single odd ray at top and the two even rays on the bottom. Number 21 is a venerated number, standing for rebirth/renaissance in the ancient and native Kurdish religion. Red is symbolizes the blood of the martyrs and the continued struggle for freedom and dignity, green is Expresses the beauty and landscapes of Kurdistan. Life and vitality, yellow is representing the source of life and light of the people. The sun is an ancient symbol and twenty-one sunbeams represent March 21, Newroz and white is Represent peace and equality.

The ceremony starts with the Kurdish national anthem “Ay Raqib” presented by the students in a live performance. Then Dr. Wasfi Kahwachi, Admin. & Fin. Vice President, presented a speech to the students mentioning the history of our flag and all the sacrifices to our country. After that the speaker invited one of our students to read a poem followed by raising up the Kurdistan flag in front of the main building.

At the same day there were an art exhibition regarding the Kurdistan flag which portraits are presented by our students. Finally, the students enjoyed the day by Kurdish dance and music.
