On Sunday, April the 2nd, the Architectural Department at Tishk International University prepared a field trip to Shanik Glass Factory on Makhmoor Road, for the second year students, the trip was supervised by the Head of the department Ms. Soma A. Kareem

Mr. Azad Ahmad organized the trip with Mr. Nawaz Dabbagh.  The students and academics arrived to the factory site at 12:00, the field trip was aiming to teach students the procedures of manufacturing glass and building glass façades.

The time the students arrived to the factory, the owners welcomed the group and introduced themselves, and they started explaining the process of glass making as they walked us through the factory.
The group was shown around the place and was told what’s what and how things are done. The walk-through tutorial started off with the cutting machines that pick the glass, measure it and cut it into certain dimensions. Also they were shown the procedures of making holes in the glass by the drilling machines, and also the ornamentation by the CMC machines.
The group then was show the mechanism of heating glass components to very high temperatures that go up to 700 Celsius and then cool it off to make the glass harden and solidify the way it is as a final product. The factory visit continued to teach the students more about the usage of the double-glazing machine that makes sandwich panels. The last stop of the visit was showing the students how (black) silicone was added to the frames, as they are let to dry off to a duration of 2 to 3 hours.

After showing around the machines and the mechanism of how the factory runs, the owners didn’t leave any unanswered questions in the minds of the students in a quick Q&A before serving a lunch meal in the place’s cafeteria before the group headed back to the university at 16:30.
The four hour visit was very informative and the students learned a lot about the manufacturing of glass and its usages as they reported.
