Tishk International University has made a collaboration agreement with DAFI (The German Albert Einstein Refugee Academic Initiative) and HOPES (Higher and Further Education Opportunities and Perspective for Syrians). The university aimed at raising the awareness of her students concerning the things happening around; in the region the existence of the people in need and hopeless is inevitable.
The delegate composing of Askal Tilahuna Protection Officer and Vaman Ameen Education Association of DAFI and HOPES Scholarships were welcomed by the president Prof. Dr. Ahmet Öztaş. During the visit, President Öztaş gave general information about the university and also talked about the Volunteer Teaching Project for the Refugees.
Dr. Süleyman Çelik Dean of Education Faculty said that in the country side of Erbil, a school has been built inside the Syrian camp, so he found a chance to guide the faculty students and give all the stimulation that they needed, in this project 19 volunteer students participated.
Dr. N. Kanar an Academic in the Faculty of Education and some ELT students decided to organize a volunteer teaching program in that school. The idea of teaching simply aimed at providing with what Tishk International students could offer to these students in need.
Dr. Kanar, the supervisor of the volunteer student teachers, stated that when they went there for the first time with lots of enthusiasm and passion, hoping that they could make difference for their innocent life, wishing them a bright future; to their surprise, when they arrived, they understood that the school had 1st grade – 12th grade students and in each class there were almost 35 students; there were more than 3000 students with only 4 or 5 English teachers. Although they studied English, lack of English teachers, books, and materials prevented them from a proper education. As volunteers they decided to give them a helping hand.
The university came to a collaboration to provide the help those students seek for, the university appreciates the volunteers and organizers and thanks the DAFI and HOPES to give the opportunity to do something as charity.
