Celebrating Kurdistan Flag Day at Tishk International University
On December 17th, 2024, Tishk International University came together to commemorate Kurdistan Flag Day in a meaningful event organized by the Dean of Students. The Kurdish flag holds profound symbolism and pride for the Kurdish people. At its heart lies the “Roj,” a glowing golden sun with 21 rays, a number steeped in significance. While the rays are mostly uniform in size, one at the top and two at the bottom stand out slightly. Each colour of the flag tells a story: red honours the sacrifices of martyrs and the ongoing fight for freedom, green symbolizes Kurdistan’s natural beauty, yellow represents energy and hope, and white stands for peace and equality.
The program was hosted by Miss Revan Rzgar, a third-year aviation student. Dr. Idris Hadi, Head of the Board of Trustees, delivered a compelling speech on the history and symbolism of the Kurdistan flag. Following him, Dr. Sultan Abu-Orabi, President of the University, reflected on the significance of the day, emphasizing its importance to both the university and the broader Kurdish community. Representing the students, Mr. Hiwa Salah, a Dentistry student and the university’s student representative, gave a heartfelt address that resonated with the audience.
The TIU Kurdish Club contributed to the celebration with two special activities. One highlighted the history and changes of the Kurdish flag over time, while the other invited participants to create a finger-painted version of the flag, symbolizing unity and connection. The event also showed the artistic and musical talents of our students. The Music Club performed a selection of national songs that stirred pride and unity, while the Art Club presented an inspiring collection of paintings celebrating the flag’s beauty and meaning. The highlight of the day was the ceremonial raising of the Kurdistan flag in front of the university’s main building, a moment filled with pride and reverence.
