National Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness

In collaboration with the Department of Medical Microbiology, College of Health Sciences at Hawler Medical University, the Medical Analysis Department, Faculty of Applied Sciences at Tishk International University (TIU) organized a national workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, held on November 22, 2023. The workshop aimed to describe how the excessive use of antibiotics is the main contributor to antimicrobial resistance. It allows microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, to develop resistance to antimicrobial agents that were once successful in treating infections.

The workshop was attended by the Head of the Board of Trustees Asst. Prof. Dr. Idris Hadi, the President of Tishk International University Prof. Dr. Sultan Abu-Orabi, the Vice President Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ozdemir, Directors of IRO and Research Center, Deans and Head of Departments at TIU, other academics and staff members. In addition to the presence of distinguished guests and academics from different universities, notably academics from Hawler Medical University, Assistant Professor Dr. Huner Kamal, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Assistant Prof. Dr. Nashwan Karkhi, Vice Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Omar Abdulkadir Nakshbandi, Director of Academic Relations at Hawler Medical University.

The workshop featured presentations by speakers including Asst. Prof. Dr. Salah Tofiq, Head of Medical Microbiology Department at Hawler Medical University, who gave an informative overview of Antimicrobial Resistance and its causes. Following this, Asst. Prof. Dr. Aryan Rizgar, Lecturer at Hawler Medical University, spoke about the significance of maintaining awareness about this issue and ways to prevent its emergence and spread.

Finally, Mr. Soran Kayfi, Asst. Lecturer and Coordinator at Medical Analysis Department stressed the significance of reducing the use of Antimicrobial drugs in agricultural and veterinary industries. This was highlighted as a significant step in reducing the likelihood of developing Antimicrobial Resistance.

The event provided the attendees with knowledge regarding the variety of practices that can aid in preventing the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
