TIU English Proficiency Test
Test format, registration, course placement, results, and exemption information
English is the language of instruction at Tishk International University (TIU). First-year students must show that
they have a suitable level of English and must also meet all requirements set by the Ministry of Higher
Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Region. The TIU English Proficiency Test assesses
students’ English skills and helps place them in the English course that is most suitable for their level.

the Kurdistan Region. - Because English is the language of instruction at TIU, first-year students must show a suitable level of
English. - Students who meet one of the approved exemption conditions do not need to take the TIU English
Proficiency Test. They are placed directly into the Advanced English course.
Test Format and Content
The test has a format similar to the Cambridge B1 Preliminary English examination. It assesses five areas, and each
area makes up 20% of the final score.
The test gives equal weight to all five areas. Speaking and writing are productive skills, while listening and reading
are receptive skills. Grammar and vocabulary are also assessed. The written test lasts 90 minutes. The speaking
test is a separate oral interview and takes place after the written test on the same day.

Registration and Test-Day Information
- The test is free of charge.
- Students can register through the Student Affairs Department.
- Apart from the Exam Slips (Exam ID Card), students must bring their National ID or passport.
- The examination halls are on the basement floor of the Education Building.
- After registration, students receive an exam admission card online. It shows the exam date, time, and assigned examination hall. They must print it out and bring it to the exam.
Results and Course Placement
The Language Preparatory School prepares and finalizes the results within three days after the test. Students can
check their results online through the university website. They must use the username and password provided by
the Student Affairs Department before the test.
Students are placed in an English course based on their overall test score:
Placement rule
Students who score 49 or below are placed in Foundation English 1 or Foundation English 2, based on their score. Students who score 50 or above are placed in Advanced English and take 3 classes per week.
A. International English Test Results
Students who meet one of the approved exemption conditions do not need to take the TIU English Proficiency Test. They are placed directly into the Advanced English course.
Exemption from the TIU English Proficiency Test
Students may submit an official and original certificate from an internationally recognized English test. The certificate must meet the minimum score shown below:

B. Graduates of Approved Schools
Students do not need to take the TIU English Proficiency Test if they have graduated from one of the approved schools listed below:
Required Document for School-Based Exemption
To receive this exemption, students must provide an official graduation document from their school administration
and submit it to the Language Preparatory School at Tishk International University.
