A Distinguished Academic Leader

Early Education and Academic Achievements: Professor Sultan T. Abu-Orabi graduated from the University of Jordan in 1973. He furthered his education in the United States, obtaining a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from Western Michigan University in 1977 and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor in 1982.

Academic and Professional Career: In July 1982, Professor Abu-Orabi commenced his career at Yarmouk University, Jordan, as an Assistant Professor. He served as a Visiting Professor at Bahrain University from 1989 to 1990, and subsequently at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia, from 1990 to 1993 and 1996 to 1998.

Leadership Roles: Professor Abu-Orabi held several key leadership positions, including Chairman of the Chemistry Department (1998-2001) and Dean of Student Affairs at Yarmouk University (2001). In 2002, he became the President of Irbid University, Jordan, and in 2005, the founding President of Tafila Technical University. He was appointed President of Yarmouk University, the second-largest university in Jordan, in 2009. In 2011, he was elected Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities, serving until 2018. Currently, he is the President of Tishk International University in Erbil, Iraq.

Contributions to the Scientific Community: Professor Abu-Orabi has been actively involved in the scientific community as President of the Jordanian Chemical Society and the Arab Union of Chemists. He is the Editor-in-Chief of several international journals and serves on numerous editorial boards. He has organized and presented at hundreds of international conferences and participated in over 250 conferences globally. He has supervised and examined dissertations for more than eighty M.Sc and Ph.D. students across various regions.

Awards and Honors: His illustrious career has earned him numerous awards, including the Shoman Prize for Young Scientists (1988), Alexander Von Humboldt fellowships (1989, 2013, 2018, 2021), and the “Badge of Honor Medal” from the International Scientific Partnership Foundation, Russia (2007). He received the “Jewels of the Muslim World” award in 2011, was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, the same year, and awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2017. In 2018, he received honorary doctorates from Bolograd University, Russia; Management and Science University, Malaysia; and the International Islamic University of Malaysia.

Publications: Professor Abu-Orabi has published over 120 research papers in his career spanning more than four decades.
