TIU Celebrates Kurdish Journalism Day

“Under the theme ‘Journalism: Identity of the Nation,’ Tishk International University (TIU) recently celebrated the anniversary of Kurdish journalism and publishing Shayan Magazine with a special ceremony organized by the staff of Shayan magazine. The event marked a significant anniversary for Kurdish journalism.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Assistant Professor Dr. Idris Hadi Salih, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Tishk International University and owner of Shayan magazine, along with Professor Dr. Sultan Abu-Orabi, the University President. Vice Presidents, Deans, Department Heads, faculty members, students, and distinguished guests from outside the university also joined the celebration.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Idris Hadi Salih lauded the pivotal role of journalism in nation-building and societal progress. He expressed gratitude towards the Shayan magazine’s editorial team for their dedication to the journalism sector through persistent publication efforts.

Following Dr. Idris Hadi, Professor Dr. Sultan Abu-Orabi extended his warm congratulations to all journalists, particularly highlighting the university’s Media Department and the Shayan magazine team for their exceptional contributions to the field.

Ms. Hero Ismail, the Editor in Chief of Shayan magazine, then took the stage. She reflected on the origins of Kurdish journalism, citing the first Kurdish newspaper, Kurdistan, and the visionary efforts of Mir Miqdad Medhat Badrkhan in utilizing the press as an intellectual tool for Kurdish rights and advocacy. Ms. Hero Ismail also detailed the evolution of Shayan magazine from a modest four-page newsletter in 2017 to a comprehensive seasonal publication exceeding 100 pages today. She commended the university’s leadership for their unwavering support of journalism, emphasizing its enduring relevance in the digital age.

The event also featured performances of several beautiful songs by the noted singer Dilzar Sardar, accompanied by the university’s music band. The celebration concluded with the distribution of awards and certificates of appreciation to the contributors and staff of Shayan magazine, which now gets to 105 authors from both within and outside the university. Several Kurdish media channels were also recognized for their contributions to Kurdish journalism.”
