International Workshop Distinguished Lecture

In cooperation with the Society of Petroleum Engineering, Erbil (SPE), the Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering at Tishk International University held an International Workshop/ Distinguished Lecture on October 20th, 2022.

The event was a part of the SPE program called Distinguished Lecturer (DL), where each year, SPE selects a group of professionals nominated by their peers to share their knowledge and expertise with SPE members through visits to local sections. The first session included a talk by Dr. Jagar Aziz, the SPE/Erbil Section Chair, about the history of SPE, followed by Mr. George Norton (Senior Completions Engineer at Red Bluff Resources, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA).

The presenter outlined a new approach for utilizing geochemistry data in conjunction with conventional log data and data analytics. The approach is applicable for drainage analysis and field development and EUR (Expected Ultimate Recovery) predicting method that can be mapped with accuracy previously unavailable. He pointed out that once EUR can be predicted in a stand-alone well, it is then possible to further evaluate spacing implications (vertically or horizontally) and accurately measure the percentage of degradation and communication. Combining this information is possible by utilizing RQI (reservoir quality index) and generating a contour map of the RQI allows the user to predict with ~75%+ accuracy the EUR of potential wells.

After the presentation, a questions and answers session was held with active participation and discussion from the audience. The Workshop/Distinguished Lecture was attended by 83 participants, including 33 staff members and 50 pre-graduation students from Tishk International University, Soran University and the University of Kurdistan-Hawler UKH).
