Erbil, Kurdistan Region – April 14, 2025 — Tishk International University (TIU) solemnly observed a Remembrance Day and Tree Planting for Peace. This event honored the victims of the Kurdish Genocide, known as the Anfal Genocide. It paid tribute to over 182,000 Kurdish civilians who lost their lives during one of the darkest periods in Kurdish history.
The ceremony began with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Welcoming remarks from the Master of Ceremony followed this. The university was honored by the presence of several distinguished guests. These included Asst. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hussain Kalari, General Director of the Quality Assurance Agency at the Ministry of Higher Education. Other consultants and directors also attended: Mr. Mohamad Khdhir Mohamad, Mrs. Sheeren Ibrahim Abdurahman, and Dr. Dlsoz Calal Hussein.
Assistant Prof. Dr. Idrees Hadi Saleh, Head of the Board of Trustees, and Prof. Dr. Sultan Abu-Orabi, President of TIU, delivered powerful speeches. They emphasized the importance of remembrance and peacebuilding. Both speakers underscored the university’s role in preserving historical memory. They also advocated for justice and unity.
The term “Anfal Genocide” refers to atrocities committed under Saddam Hussein’s regime between 1986 and 1989, particularly in 1988. During this period, entire Kurdish villages were bombed, razed, and depopulated. These acts have since been recognized globally as genocide and crimes against humanity.
As part of the event, a seminar was held. It discussed the historical and humanitarian dimensions of the genocide. This provided a platform for students and faculty. They reflected on the past and explored ways to foster peace and resilience.
In a symbolic act of hope, students and staff planted trees across the university campus. This turned remembrance into action. It also demonstrated their commitment to a peaceful and sustainable future.
